Questions to ask a wedding photographer

6 min read
A photographer carrying two cameras on a leather harness walks a hedge-lined stone path towards a couple.

Once you know whose photography you prefer, these questions protect the decision. Ask them by email; the answers are worth having in writing.

Coverage

  • How many hours are included, and what does extra time cost?
  • Will you photograph the whole day yourself?
  • Is a second photographer included or available?
  • Have you worked at our venue, or how do you prepare for a new one?

Delivery

  • Roughly how many edited images do we receive?
  • How long until we see them?
  • Do we get a preview soon after the wedding?
  • How are the files delivered, and for how long can we download them?

Safety and contingency

  • How are files backed up on the day and afterwards?
  • What happens if you are ill or unable to attend?
  • Do you carry insurance?

Rights and privacy

  • May we print freely and share online?
  • Will our photographs be used for your marketing, and can we decline?

Money

  • What is the deposit, and is it refundable?
  • When is the balance due?
  • Are travel, accommodation or albums extra?

Once you have answers from both photographers, bring everything together with our checklist for choosing between two wedding photographers.
